Part-time Choir Director/Organist
Starling Avenue Baptist Church in Martinsville, Virginia is seeking a part time Choir Director/Organist to plan and present the choral, organ and instrumental music for regular and special services. The musician will coordinate, with the pastor and worship planning group, hymn selections for our traditional services as well as provide leadership for the overall music program of the church. JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary of Position:
Plans, leads and performs the music for worship services. Directs the music education ministry of the church. Work is performed under the supervision of the pastor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Plans and presents the choral, organ and instrumental music for regular and special worship services, in coordination with the pastor and with worship planning group in selecting hymns for worship
· Directs the adult choir and accompanies them on the organ or piano.
· Maintains a practice schedule to allow adequate preparation of service music and of choir
· Provides training, resources, assistance and supervision to the choir
· Promotes choir enlistment and builds Christian fellowship through the music Ministry
· Administers choir rolls
· Supervises music library maintenance, music licenses, and record keeping of music used
· Prepares and presents annual budget requests to the stewardship committee for projected music ministry and equipment needs
· Participates in preparation of communications such as the bulletins and advertising
· Works with the worship planning committee other church committees or teams as determined in coordination with the pastor
· Assists with volunteer recruitment and coordination
· Secures qualified substitutes for vacation or other absences in coordination with the pastor
· Plays the organ/piano for funeral when requested, if available. Funerals are included in salary. If an honorarium is offered, accept gracefully. Wedding fees to be negotiated by musician
· Arranges for and supervises the regular maintenance of the organ and pianos
· Assists in maintaining the appearance of the sanctuary and choir rooms
· Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Good working knowledge of church music, vocal training methods, organ and choral literature
· Broad appreciation of musical style, and ability to work with a variety of age groups
· Working knowledge of lectionary
· Working knowledge of computer applications used in the music ministry
· General knowledge of office procedure and record maintenance techniques
· Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment
· Skilled in playing the organ
· Ability to accept supervision
· Ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing
· Ability to work as part of a team
· Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the general membership
· Ability to be professional and personable
· Ability to foster fellowship in musical groups
· Successfully passes a background check
Education and Experience:
· BA degree in music from accredited college or equivalent
· Concentration in church music, vocal and organ preferred
· Experience in church music ministry preferred
